Applied 8 Times for H-1B, Still No Visa: Indian Worker Opens Up About Struggles

For many, securing an H-1B visa to work in the U.S. is a lifelong dream—but not everyone succeeds. This was the reality for 35-year-old Sai, an Indian worker who came to the U.S. 11 years ago to study and build a life, only to face repeated setbacks in his career and personal life.

Eight Attempts, No Luck
Sai revealed that despite earning a master’s degree, pursuing another master’s, and finally completing a PhD, he applied for the H-1B visa eight times and was never selected in the lottery. “I worked hard, followed the rules, and tried to build a stable life here. Unfortunately, this uncertainty left my life on hold. I lost jobs, had to return to India multiple times, and now live with constant worry about the future,” he said.

Visa Status Affecting Personal Life
Sai also shared that his visa status prevented him from getting married. “No family wants to marry their daughter to someone without stable visa status. My peers are already settled, with homes and children, while I am left behind. This isn’t due to lack of effort on my part, but circumstances beyond my control,” he explained.

Family Struggles to Understand
He added, “My parents don’t fully understand my situation. They compare my life to that of my peers and ask why I haven’t settled yet. It hurts deeply, but most of the time I remain silent.”

Sai shared his story to reassure others in similar situations that they are not alone in facing the challenges of the H-1B lottery system. The U.S. government recently announced changes to this lottery system, but uncertainty remains for thousands of skilled Indian workers dreaming of building a career in America.
