Why Many Indians Abroad Don’t Return Despite Earning Crores

For many Indians living abroad, money is not the only priority. Quality of life, work environment, and everyday convenience play an equally important role. This is why several Indians, even after saving crores, choose to settle abroad rather than return to India.

Life Abroad Feels Easier

Recently, a social media post by Swapnil Kommawar (@KommawarSwapnil) sparked a heated debate on why Indians often stay abroad. He shared a conversation with a friend living in Canada, who explained:

“Even after saving 5-6 crores, many people don’t consider coming back to India. It’s not that they dislike India. Life abroad is simply easier.”

According to his friend, life abroad is smoother due to clear work rules, fair overtime compensation, and minimal corruption. He pointed out that even small daily hassles in India—like pollution, traffic, and stress—can be exhausting.

Peace of Mind Matters More Than Money

Kommawar’s friend emphasized that earning money alone is not enough to cope with everyday challenges. He added:

“Money is important, but even more crucial is peace of mind, respect at work, and support from the system.”

Despite this, many Indians continue to feel a strong emotional connection to their homeland. As Kommawar noted, “He still loves India emotionally, but practically, life abroad feels more stable and less judgmental.”

Public Reaction on Social Media

The post resonated widely. Some users related to it, while others criticized the perspective. Comments included:

  • “Make cities livable, build proper sidewalks, manage waste, and address pollution—then maybe people would consider returning.”
  • “Many NRIs have stopped annual trips to India due to safety concerns, fear of being cheated even by relatives or strangers.”
  • “Those who returned after watching the movie ‘Swades’ might now regret it.”

Other responses highlighted that patriotism cannot pay bills, and that quality of life outweighs nationalistic sentiments. Many concluded that loving India and living comfortably there are not always compatible.
