New Delhi: Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal is mourning the sudden loss of his son Agnivesh Agarwal, who passed away in the United States at the age of 49. Agnivesh had been injured in a skiing accident and was undergoing treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, when he suffered a fatal cardiac arrest.
In an emotional post on social media platform X, Anil Agarwal described the tragedy as the darkest day of his life.
“My Agnivesh, my 49-year-old son, is no longer with us. What could be worse than a father having to carry his son’s body? Agnivesh went skiing in the U.S. with a friend, had an accident, and was recovering at Mount Sinai Hospital. We thought everything would be fine… but suddenly he suffered a cardiac arrest and left us.”
Born in Patna, Raised with Love and Values
Agnivesh was born on 3 June 1976 in Patna into a middle-class Bihari family. Anil Agarwal fondly recalled his son as playful, mischievous, and protective of his sister Priya. He excelled academically and personally, having studied at Mayo College, Ajmer.
Agnivesh was a man of remarkable talents — a boxing champion, skilled equestrian, and accomplished musician. He founded the company Fujeirah Gold and served as Chairman of Hindustan Zinc, yet remained grounded, humble, and deeply connected to friends and colleagues.
A Promise to Society
Reflecting on his son’s values, Anil Agarwal wrote, “I had promised Agnivesh that over 75% of our wealth would be dedicated to social causes. Today, I renew that promise. I will live life with even greater simplicity and dedicate the rest of my life to this cause.”
A Heartbreaking Loss
Anil Agarwal expressed his grief: “He was not just a son — he was my friend, my pride, my entire world. Kiran and I are shattered. All we can think is that our son is gone. But those who work with us at Vedanta are all part of Agnivesh — they are our children. Agnivesh and I dreamed of making India self-reliant. He always said: ‘Papa, our country has everything — why should we fall behind?’”
He further added, “Our deepest wish was that no child in our country should sleep hungry, no child remain uneducated, every woman stand on her own feet, and every youth get employment. I thank all friends, colleagues, and well-wishers who stood by Agnivesh. There was so much more to do together, so many dreams left unfinished. Life without you will always feel incomplete, but I will ensure your dreams are fulfilled.”
