New Delhi: Tata Group company Tata Steel has come under legal scrutiny overseas after a lawsuit worth $1.6 billion (approximately ₹13,000 crore) was filed against its Dutch subsidiaries in the Netherlands. The case has been initiated by a local non-governmental organisation (NGO), alleging environmental and health-related damages.
In a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges, Tata Steel informed investors that the lawsuit has been filed by Stichting Frisse Wind (SFW) in a district court in the Netherlands. The NGO has sought compensation, claiming that emissions from Tata Steel’s IJmuiden plant have adversely affected the health of residents living in nearby areas.
Allegations by the NGO
According to the petition, toxic and harmful substances released from the IJmuiden facility have allegedly caused health problems among local communities. The NGO has further claimed that pollution from the plant has led to a decline in property values in surrounding residential areas, compared to other regions.
Tata Steel’s Response
Tata Steel has categorically rejected the allegations, describing them as “unfounded, unsubstantiated and speculative.” The company stated that the NGO has failed to provide credible evidence to support its claims and asserted that it has strong legal grounds to contest the case.
The steel major emphasized that it has been consistently investing in measures to reduce emissions and improve environmental performance. Tata Steel also highlighted its ongoing collaboration with Dutch authorities under its Green Steel transition plan.
Earlier this year, the company, in partnership with the Dutch government, launched a $7 billion decarbonisation and health-focused project, aimed at significantly reducing carbon emissions and improving environmental and public health outcomes in the region.
Legal Battle Ahead
Tata Steel has said it is fully prepared to defend itself in court and will vigorously oppose the claims. The company maintains that it operates in compliance with environmental regulations and remains committed to sustainable and responsible manufacturing practices.
The development is being closely watched by investors and industry observers, given Tata Steel’s global footprint and the growing focus on environmental accountability in international markets.
