New Delhi: The name Sabyasachi Mukherjee is now synonymous with luxury, heritage, and exquisite craftsmanship in the fashion world. But the journey to building this iconic brand was far from easy. From personal struggles and financial hardships to moments of deep despair, Sabyasachi’s story is a testament to resilience, creativity, and determination.
Humble Beginnings
Born in 1974 in Kolkata to a middle-class family, Sabyasachi’s father was a refugee from Bangladesh. The family faced significant financial challenges after the decline of the jute industry and the growing use of plastic. These struggles shaped Sabyasachi’s character, creativity, and future ambitions, leaving a lasting impact on his childhood.
A Difficult Education and Inner Struggles
From a young age, Sabyasachi was introverted, finding solace in art and design. The rich history and diverse cultures of Kolkata inspired his imagination. However, his school years were fraught with challenges, and traditional education never captured his interest. Eventually, he chose a path that led him to the world of fashion.
Admitted to the prestigious National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, he faced intense personal pressure, financial worries, and self-doubt. These challenges pushed him into a dark phase, even leading to thoughts of suicide. Speaking about this period, Sabyasachi once said that depression, though painful, gave him clarity, purpose, and the courage to channel his creativity into his work.
The Birth of a Fashion Empire
Sabyasachi began his career in the 1990s, when the Indian fashion industry was still in its infancy. His unique style—blending Indian heritage with a modern touch—set him apart. His designs told stories, celebrating intricate embroidery, traditional craftsmanship, and a fusion of global and local aesthetics.
In 1999, Sabyasachi opened his first studio in Kolkata, marking a crucial step in his business journey. His bridal collections, featuring luxury fabrics, exquisite jewelry, and intricate designs, quickly gained recognition. Celebrities and the wealthy elite were drawn to his creations, which were more than just clothes—they celebrated India’s cultural legacy and artistry.
Celebrity Endorsements and Global Recognition
As his reputation grew, Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee, Priyanka Chopra, and Deepika Padukone became regular clients. Wearing Sabyasachi’s designs became a symbol of status, elegance, and prestige.
A Billion-Dollar Vision
By 2020, Sabyasachi’s company had an estimated turnover of ₹275 crore. In 2021, he sold 51% of his brand to Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail Limited (ABFRL) for ₹398 crore, enabling more ambitious expansion plans. Last year, his estimated turnover reached ₹500 crore, and he aims to transform his brand into a global luxury powerhouse, targeting a valuation of $2 billion by 2030.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s story is not just about fashion—it’s about turning adversity into opportunity, finding purpose in creativity, and building a legacy that inspires millions.
