New Delhi: India has produced countless inspiring women who dared to dream big and turned those dreams into remarkable success stories. One such powerful name is Leena Nair, a globally respected Indian-British business leader who has achieved what very few can even imagine — becoming the Global Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Chanel, one of the world’s most prestigious luxury fashion brands.

Her journey from a small city in Maharashtra to leading a global luxury empire is a story of vision, determination, hard work, and courage. Leena Nair’s rise is not just a personal achievement but also a symbol of India’s growing presence in global leadership.

A Global Indian Leader

Leena Nair has been serving as Chanel’s Global CEO since December 2021. She made history by becoming the first Indian and only the second woman to lead the brand in its more than 100-year-long legacy.

Her influence has extended far beyond the corporate boardroom. In July 2023, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Leena Nair in Paris, it was seen as more than a formal interaction — it reflected India’s rising stature in the global business world.

Early Life in Kolhapur

Leena Nair was born on June 11, 1969, in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, into a Hindu Malayali family. Her parents placed a strong emphasis on education and encouraged her to study and aim high.

She attended the Holy Cross Convent School, where she became part of the institution’s first female graduate batch, showcasing early signs of leadership and ambition.

Engineering Gold Medallist and XLRI MBA

Leena Nair’s academic achievements laid a strong foundation for her extraordinary career. She completed her engineering degree in Electronics and Telecommunications, graduating as a gold medallist.

Later, in 1992, she earned her MBA from the prestigious XLRI – Xavier School of Management, one of India’s top business institutions. She also became the first woman in her family to pursue higher education, setting an example that would inspire many others.

Beginning of a Remarkable Career at Unilever

Leena Nair started her professional journey at Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) as a summer intern. Soon after, she joined the company in 1992 as a management trainee, marking the beginning of a long and influential career.

Over the years, she worked in factories, sales offices, and corporate headquarters, building deep knowledge of business operations. Despite working in a male-dominated corporate environment, she earned recognition through consistent performance, resilience, and strategic thinking.

Creating History at Hindustan Unilever

By 2007, Leena Nair became the Executive Director of Human Resources at Hindustan Unilever, making her one of the youngest leaders in the company’s history. She also became the first woman to join the company’s Management Committee, a major milestone in corporate India.

According to Forbes, she played a key role in achieving Unilever’s goal of a 50-50 gender balance in global leadership.

In 2016, she reached another historic milestone by becoming Unilever’s first female, first Asian, and youngest-ever Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO). She remained a key member of the executive committee until 2020.

Appointment as Chanel CEO in 2021

In December 2021, Leena Nair was appointed CEO of Chanel, instantly making headlines across the world. She became a rare figure in the luxury industry — an Indian-origin woman leading one of the most elite fashion brands globally.

Before her, the only woman to have led Chanel was Maureen Chiquet, who served as CEO from 2007 to 2016.

Awards and Global Recognition

Leena Nair’s leadership has earned her global recognition. In 2025, she received the prestigious Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) award for her strong contribution to the retail and consumer industry.

She has also been recognized earlier by:

  • Queen Elizabeth II (2017)
  • Forbes list of the World’s Most Powerful Women, ranked 68th in 2021

Personal Life
