New Delhi: The rapid development of India’s highways and expressways has brought unprecedented connectivity for travelers—but mobile network black spots on these roads continue to pose challenges. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has identified 424 locations across highways and expressways where mobile signals are weak or absent. The agency has written to telecom regulator TRAI, urging action to improve network coverage in these areas.
According to NHAI, lack of network connectivity not only inconveniences travelers but also hampers emergency services. Ambulances, patrol units, and other field teams face difficulties communicating during accidents or urgent situations.
The identified “telecom black spots” cover approximately 1,750 km. In a letter to TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti, NHAI Chairman Satish Kumar Yadav highlighted how the absence of mobile connectivity affects highway operations, field units, and coordination with security agencies.
Problem Areas:
Network issues are particularly severe on newly constructed highways and expressways passing through remote regions. Key affected stretches include:
- Delhi–Mumbai Expressway: Three sections near Ratlam spanning 69 km have no mobile coverage.
- Madhya Pradesh: 51 km between Harda and Betul remain network-free.
- Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway: About 15 km stretch without coverage.
- Tamil Nadu (Tambaram–Tiruvallur section): 17 km affected.
- Andhra Pradesh (Warangal–Khammam): 11.8 km without signal.
- Mumbai–Vadodara Expressway (Thane section): 10.8 km affected.
Additionally, NHAI has identified 1,665 accident-prone spots along highways and expressways due to stray animals.
Alert System Proposal:
Officials have suggested that travelers be alerted in advance via SMS and flash messages when approaching high-risk locations. “These alerts would notify motorists approximately 15 minutes before they reach accident-prone areas,” said an NHAI official. The agency has requested TRAI to direct telecom operators to send these alerts free of charge, aiming to save lives and improve safety on highways.
With these measures, commuters can expect better network connectivity and enhanced safety while traveling on India’s growing highway network.
