Nestlé Recalls Baby Products Worldwide Amid Concerns Over Toxic Contamination, Affects 25 Countries

Nestlé, the maker of popular brands like Maggi, KitKat, and Nescafé, has recalled baby products from several countries due to concerns over potential toxic contamination. The company suspects that the affected products may contain a harmful substance that could cause vomiting and nausea. This recall is being considered one of the largest in the company’s history.

Toxic Substance Found in Baby Formula:

Nestlé announced that it had decided to pull back certain batches of infant milk from several European countries. According to a statement on their website, the recall was prompted by a quality issue identified with a supplier. Nestlé is investigating all the ingredients used in the affected products, including formulas like SMA, BEBA, and NAN.

Potential Health Risks:

Reuters reported that the recalled products might contain cereulide, a toxic substance produced by certain strains of the Bacillus cereus bacteria. This substance is known to cause food poisoning symptoms such as vomiting and stomach cramps. The recall started on a smaller scale in December and was extended to more batches in early January.

Despite these concerns, the company has stated that there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses linked to the affected products. The health ministry of Austria mentioned that over 800 products from more than 10 factories were impacted by this recall, marking it as the company’s largest-ever product withdrawal. However, Nestlé has not confirmed these figures.

Nestlé’s Market and Financial Impact:

Nestlé’s spokesperson explained that the quality issue arose from a major supplier, which led the company to test arachidonic acid oil and related oil mixes used in the production of baby nutrition products. Following these tests, the company decided to recall the affected batches.

In the wake of the recall, Nestlé’s shares have dropped by more than 3% over the past two days. According to SkyQuest Technology Group, Nestlé holds nearly a quarter of the global baby nutrition market, valued at $92.2 billion.

While Nestlé does not disclose specific sales data, its baby formula products are part of its Nutrition and Health Science division, which generated a total revenue of 91.4 billion Swiss Francs ($115.4 billion) in 2024.

Details of the Recall:

The recall covers batches of products sold in Europe, Turkey, and Argentina. It was triggered by the possible contamination with cereulide, a toxin produced by certain Bacillus cereus bacteria.

Symptoms of Contamination:

The UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) has stated that cereulide is not destroyed by boiling or even by the use of hot water in preparing baby formula. It can lead to food poisoning symptoms, which develop quickly, including vomiting and stomach cramps. Nestlé has provided batch numbers for the affected products, urging consumers not to use them.

Nestlé has assured that it is working to minimize supply chain disruptions, and it identified the source of the potential contamination at a factory in the Netherlands. The Dutch food safety authority (NVWA) confirmed that contaminated raw materials had been used at several production sites, both within the Netherlands and at some of Nestlé’s factories abroad.
