India to Build Country’s Largest Lithium-Ion Battery Gigafactory, From Cells to Storage Systems

New Delhi: India is taking a major step toward self-reliance in battery manufacturing with the establishment of the country’s largest integrated lithium-ion battery gigafactory in Andhra Pradesh. The factory, set up by Waaree Energy Storage Solution (WESSPL)—a subsidiary of Waaree Energies—will manufacture lithium-ion cells, battery packs, and grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Location and Capacity
The gigafactory will be located in Rambilli, Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh. With a planned capacity of 16 GWh, it will produce battery cells, battery packs for electric vehicles, and BESS units capable of storing electricity and supplying it to the grid when renewable sources like solar or wind are unavailable.

Investment and Employment
The project involves an investment of approximately ₹8,175 crore. Once operational, the factory will directly employ around 3,000 people and create thousands more indirect jobs. The project recently received in-principle approval from the Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB), chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Entirely Made in Andhra Pradesh
Unlike typical large-scale factories that rely on imported raw materials, this gigafactory will follow a backward integration model, producing everything from raw materials to finished products within the state. The initiative aims to transform Andhra Pradesh from a hub for power generation into a clean energy manufacturing powerhouse.

Government Support and Vision
Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh said, “This will be India’s largest battery manufacturing plant, notable not only for its capacity but also for its fully integrated setup. It will include battery cells, battery packs, and grid-scale storage systems. Our goal is to create a complete clean energy value chain in the state. After renewable power generation and solar manufacturing, this project will strengthen advanced energy storage, a strategic area for India’s energy security.”

Stock Performance
Shares of Waaree Energies closed at ₹2,964.10 on BSE Wednesday. Today, they opened at ₹2,963, dipped to ₹2,940.25, and later recovered to ₹2,988.25. As of 9:30 AM, the stock was trading at ₹2,956.35, down 0.26% compared to yesterday.
