Former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia Passes Away: How Much Was Her Net Worth?

Khaleda Zia, the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh and longtime political leader, passed away today at the age of 80 in a Dhaka hospital. Born in 1945 in Jalpaiguri, India, she married Ziaur Rahman in 1959, who later became President of Bangladesh in 1977.

After the assassination of Ziaur Rahman in 1981, Khaleda Zia entered active politics and took charge of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 1984. Under her leadership, the opposition won the 1991 elections, making her the country’s first woman Prime Minister. She held office from 1991 to 1996 and again from 2001 to 2006, leaving an indelible mark on Bangladesh’s political landscape.

While exact details of Khaleda Zia’s net worth are not publicly verified, media reports suggest it was in the millions of dollars. According to a 2018 affidavit, her annual income was approximately 1.52 crore Bangladeshi Taka. Of this, 67,31,314 Taka came from rent on houses, apartments, and shops, while 85,09,813 Taka was earned through shares, savings certificates, and bank deposits.

Seven years ago, her declared assets included only 50,300 Taka in cash, with 4,77,85,267 Taka deposited in banks and financial institutions. She also owned vehicles valued at 48,65,000 Taka, electronic items worth 5,00,000 Taka, and furniture worth 2,60,000 Taka. Her immovable assets included non-agricultural land valued at 12,300 Taka, alongside outstanding rental receivables of 1,58,00,000 Taka.

Khaleda Zia’s political journey was marked by power, struggle, and controversy, leaving behind a complex legacy in Bangladesh’s history.
