Electric Scooter Prices Fall
Electric scooters have become significantly more affordable, now reaching price levels comparable to petrol scooters. Several models are available for under ₹1 lakh, signaling a shift in the market.
Industry experts note a clear trend: electric scooters, once considered expensive and niche, are now competing directly with petrol scooters in the mainstream segment. Leading manufacturers like Bajaj, TVS, and Hero MotoCorp have launched cost-effective electric models in the ₹85,000–₹95,000 range. This price parity could accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across India.
Affordable Models Leading the Change
Bajaj Auto recently launched the Chetak C25 01, priced at around ₹91,000, its most affordable model in the Chetak series. TVS and Hero MotoCorp had already introduced budget-friendly electric scooters in a similar price bracket. As a result, customers now face a direct choice between petrol and electric scooters. Considering fuel costs, maintenance, and long-term savings, electric scooters have emerged as a strong contender. They offer near-zero fuel expenses and lower servicing costs, giving them a clear advantage over traditional scooters.
Balancing Features and Affordability
To keep prices competitive, some premium features have been simplified without compromising safety or core technology. For instance, the Bajaj Chetak C25 01 comes with a 2.5 kWh battery, a claimed range of 113 km, LED lights, 25 liters of storage, and basic smart features. TVS has strengthened its presence in the affordable segment with the iQube, while Hero MotoCorp reduced prices for the VIDA series to intensify competition.
Remaining Challenges
Despite falling prices, some challenges remain. Charging infrastructure is not yet widespread, and concerns over battery life and resale value persist. However, the new price levels largely offset these issues, making electric scooters a compelling alternative for many buyers.
Overall, the arrival of electric scooters at petrol scooter price points marks a turning point for the Indian two-wheeler industry, potentially driving faster adoption of EVs nationwide.
