New Delhi: The government is expected to present the Union Budget for FY 2026-27 on 1st or 2nd February. This year, several initiatives targeting women are likely to be announced, focusing on enhancing financial access and protection.
According to the Economic Times, the government aims to provide women with greater access to credit and insurance through Jan Dhan accounts. The plan also includes measures to improve grievance redressal, particularly in relation to insurance claims.
Women-Oriented Financial Initiatives
The upcoming budget may introduce special credit cards, loans, and insurance plans for women. The government also intends to expand existing initiatives launched in last year’s budget, including the rural credit score program and financial support for first-time entrepreneurs. Officials are reportedly evaluating suggestions to assist small businesses and self-help groups (SHGs) in rural areas with their credit needs.
Reactivating Dormant Accounts
Officials have indicated that the government is considering broadening the coverage of public welfare schemes and offering policyholders enhanced insurance options. As part of this effort, the NITI Aayog is reviewing the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) to reactivate dormant accounts and encourage their continued use by providing increased access to credit and insurance facilities.
Government’s Vision
The ultimate goal is to reach 100% of the population. The NITI Aayog emphasizes that improving access to credit and promoting financial literacy are essential for strengthening India’s digital economy. These measures form part of the broader PMJDY evaluation and align with the government’s financial inclusion agenda, aimed at building a ‘Developed India’ by 2047.
Enhanced Regulatory Oversight
Officials also highlighted that the budget may focus on initiatives that benefit consumers, such as tracking unclaimed funds and improving the regulatory framework for resolving insurance claim disputes more effectively.
