BMC Elections 2026: Mumbai’s Municipal Budget Outshines Entire States Like Goa, Himachal & Tripura

New Delhi: Voting began today for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, India’s richest municipal body. With 1,700 candidates contesting, the city saw several prominent personalities—including Akshay Kumar, Saina Malhotra, and Sachin Tendulkar—casting their votes. While BMC elections always attract national attention, the municipality’s budget remains the biggest reason for the spotlight.

For the 2025-26 financial year, BMC presented a record budget of ₹74,427 crore, which is not only the largest for a municipal corporation in India but also exceeds the entire budgets of several states. To put this in perspective:

  • Goa: ₹28,162 crore
  • Arunachal Pradesh: ₹39,842 crore
  • Himachal Pradesh: ₹58,514 crore
  • Sikkim: ₹16,196 crore
  • Tripura: ₹31,412 crore

Among other major municipal bodies, Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) proposed a budget of ₹16,530 crore for 2026-27, while Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) approved ₹19,930 crore for 2025-26.

Where BMC Revenue Comes From
BMC’s growing revenue base is driven by fees, taxes, development charges, and investment income. Its strong financial reserves and fixed deposits enable the corporation to operate a budget far larger than other municipal bodies in the country.

How BMC Spends Its Money
BMC allocates its funds across multiple areas, including road and bridge construction, sewage systems, public health, education, safety, and employee salaries & pensions. In 2024, nearly 47% of its revenue was spent on Mumbai’s infrastructure alone, underlining its role as a financial powerhouse among Indian municipal bodies.
