Bharat Bandh: Will Banks Open Today? Key Updates Before You Visit a Branch

Nationwide Strike Called by Workers and Farmers:
Several workers’ and farmers’ organizations across India have called for a Bharat Bandh today. Major banking associations have also expressed support, raising concerns about potential disruptions in government bank operations. However, neither the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) nor banks have officially declared a bank holiday.

Impact on Banking Services:
Retail customers are confused about whether banks will remain open. Banks including SBI, UCO Bank, and Bank of Baroda have informed the BSE that operations may be affected due to the bandh.

  • Bank of Baroda stated that it is taking all necessary measures to ensure smooth functioning across all branches and offices, but acknowledges that operations could be disrupted.
  • SBI, the country’s largest public sector bank, said it has made arrangements to maintain normal operations, though some impact is possible.
  • UCO Bank also confirmed that it has implemented measures to keep branches and offices functional, while noting potential disruptions.

Support from Bank Unions:
Leading banking unions, including the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA), and Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), have asked their members to support the bandh.

The unions’ joint letter highlighted concerns over the proposed Labor Code, stating that it is against workers’ interests. Bank employees have long demanded better work-life balance and a five-day work week.

The bandh has also been backed by ten central trade union federations, including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICTU, LPF, and UTUC. Farmers’ organizations have additionally protested against the India–US trade deal.

RBI Guidance and Expected Operations:
Despite the bandh, the RBI has not declared a bank holiday, which means branches are technically open. However, operations may be affected, particularly in-person branch services, check clearance, deposits, and withdrawals. Online banking and ATMs are expected to function normally. Private banks are also expected to maintain regular operations.

What Customers Should Know:

  • Online and ATM services should remain operational.
  • Branch-based services may face delays or disruptions.
  • Plan essential banking transactions accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
