Banana Prices Shock: Farmers Sell at 50 Paise per Kg While Delhi Consumers Pay ₹86

New Delhi: Farmers in Andhra Pradesh are facing severe distress as banana prices crash to a mere 50 paise per kilogram. This comes in stark contrast to Delhi, where the same fruit is being sold at ₹86 per kilogram on e-commerce platforms like Amazon Fresh.

Farmers Struggle Amidst Price Crash
Recent reports have highlighted that farmers across India are increasingly grappling with falling crop prices. Just as onion farmers in Madhya Pradesh were seen discarding their produce due to prices dropping to ₹1 per kilogram, banana farmers in Andhra Pradesh are unable to cover even their production costs. Despite months of hard work and significant investment, these farmers are left with minimal returns.

Jagan Mohan Reddy Voices Concern
Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to highlight the plight of banana farmers. He stated, “The condition of banana farmers in Andhra Pradesh is dire. One kilogram of bananas is selling for just 50 paise. Yes, you heard that right—less than a matchbox or even a biscuit. Farmers invested lakhs of rupees and months of labor, but their efforts are met only with pain.”

He added, “This is not limited to bananas. From onions to tomatoes, farmers are not receiving fair prices for their crops. During natural calamities, they received no free crop insurance or support. All promises have proven to be empty.”

Past vs Present
Reddy recalled, “During the previous government, the average banana price was ₹25 per kilogram (₹25,000 per ton). Special trains were run to transport produce to Delhi to prevent losses, saving thousands of families. Cold storage facilities were also established across the state to help farmers sell their crops at fair prices. Today, under Chandrababu Naidu, farmers are left at the mercy of fate, watching their hard work go to waste.”

Price Gap Across Markets
To understand the scale of disparity, banana prices in Delhi were checked on Amazon’s Quick Commerce section. Here, bananas were priced at ₹86 per kilogram after a 28% discount, while the original price stood at ₹120 per kilogram.
