Balrampur, Feb 3:
A disturbing case involving allegations of forced religious conversion, illegal confinement, and physical torture has come to light in Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur district. Based on a complaint filed by the victim, the police have registered a case against a woman and her relatives and initiated an investigation.
The complainant, Bhupendra Pratap Chauhan, a resident of Pahlwara locality in Balrampur, alleged that he was trapped in a love relationship, held captive for months, subjected to physical abuse, and forcibly converted to another religion, including being made to undergo circumcision.
According to the complaint, Bhupendra had been working in Dubai since 2019. In 2021, he came into contact with a woman named Rukhsar, a resident of Thalendi village under Bachhrawan police station in Rae Bareli district. The two allegedly developed a relationship through WhatsApp calls and messages.
Bhupendra claimed that after returning to India, he went to meet Rukhsar at her residence, where he was allegedly confined in a room for nearly a month and pressured to accept Islam. He further alleged that Rukhsar’s uncle Pappu and another relative Noor Ahmad were also involved in the alleged acts of intimidation and torture.
Allegations of Torture and Forced Conversion
In his complaint, the victim alleged that he was subjected to severe physical abuse, including electric shocks and the pulling out of his nails. He further claimed that in 2022, he was forcibly circumcised, following which a cleric was called to perform religious conversion rituals. He also alleged that he was married to Rukhsar through Nikah, and his name was changed without his consent.
The victim stated that despite repeated attempts, he was unable to escape due to continuous threats to his life. He claimed that he finally managed to flee captivity on January 30, 2026, after which he returned to Balrampur and narrated the incident to his family, who then approached the police.
Bhupendra further alleged that even after escaping, he continues to receive threatening phone calls, pressuring him to return and warning him of dire consequences.
Allegation of Organised Conversion Network
The victim has also claimed that the accused are part of an organised network involved in similar cases of religious conversion through deception. He linked the incident to earlier cases reported in Balrampur involving alleged conversion rackets targeting individuals working abroad.
Police Response
Confirming the development, Manoj Kumar Singh, Station House Officer of Kotwali Nagar Police Station, said that a case has been registered under relevant sections based on the victim’s complaint.
“The matter is being investigated thoroughly. Further action will be taken based on evidence that emerges during the probe,” he said.
The police have stated that all allegations are being examined, and the investigation remains ongoing.
