Weather Alert for February 20: Heavy Rain Predicted in 6 States, Winds Up to 50 km/h; IMD Issues New Update

New Delhi: Rain is set to return as a concern in parts of India, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing alerts for six states ahead of February 20, 2026. Strong winds and a possible drop in temperatures are expected as rainfall spreads across the country.

Nationwide Overview

After a brief spell of warmth, rainfall is set to begin in several states, potentially bringing a temporary chill in affected areas. Residents are advised to stay cautious, particularly in hilly regions such as Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, where localized weather updates are essential before travel.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the southeastern Bay of Bengal, adjoining parts of the East Indian Ocean, the southern Andaman Sea, Gulf of Mannar, the Comorin region, and off the western coast of Sri Lanka on February 20 due to rough sea conditions.

States Under Heavy Rain Alert

From February 20 to 23, IMD has issued warnings of heavy rainfall in:

  • Uttarakhand
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Tamil Nadu
  • Kerala
  • Jharkhand
  • West Bengal

Rainfall is expected to lower temperatures by 2–3°C, accompanied by strong winds of 40–50 km/h.

  • February 21–22: Heavy rain likely in southern Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Mahe.
  • February 22–24: Scattered showers expected in Uttarakhand.
  • February 23: Rainfall forecast in Himachal Pradesh.
  • February 24: Heavy rain likely in West Bengal’s Gangetic plains and Jharkhand.
  • February 23–24: Odisha may witness light rain with thunder and lightning.

City-wise Forecasts

Delhi: No rain expected on February 20, but daytime temperatures will rise. Maximum: 27°C, Minimum: 14°C. Restrictions under the second phase of the GRAP have been lifted following improved air quality.

Lucknow, UP: No rain forecast. Recent showers caused temperatures to drop slightly in cities including Gorakhpur, Deoria, Prayagraj, Lucknow, Kanpur, Ayodhya, Bijnor, Jhansi, Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Bareilly, Meerut, and Gautam Buddh Nagar. Lucknow: Max 29°C, Min 16°C.

Patna, Bihar: Temperatures likely to rise sharply, ranging 30–32°C in districts including Patna, Gaya, Jehanabad, East and West Champaran, Gopalganj, Munger, Bhagalpur, Khagaria, Begusarai, Samastipur, and Darbhanga. Patna: Max 29°C, Min 18°C.

Uttarakhand: Scattered rainfall expected from February 22–24 in districts including Dehradun, Nainital, Uttarkashi, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli. Temperatures likely to fall.

Himachal Pradesh: Rain forecast on February 23 in districts including Shimla, Bilaspur, Chamba, Kangra, Kinnaur, Kullu, Mandi, and Solan. Shimla: Max 19°C, Min 7°C.

Jharkhand: Weather may worsen on February 24 with rainfall and strong winds in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Hazaribagh, Palamu, Bokaro, and East Singhbhum. Ranchi: Max 28°C, Min 17°C.

Madhya Pradesh: Rain expected in districts such as Vidisha, Rajgarh, Dhar, Ratlam, Indore, Ujjain, Shajapur, Agar, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Guna, Shivpuri, Gwalior, Datia, Bhind, Morena, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, and Niwari. Winds of 30–40 km/h may affect Gwalior, Datia, Bhind, Shyopur, and Morena. Bhopal: Max 28°C, Min 17°C.

Rajasthan: No rainfall expected on February 20. Some districts may experience a slight temperature drop following previous rains. Jaipur: Max 26°C, Min 14°C.

Tamil Nadu & Kerala: Moderate rain with thunder likely in select areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on February 21 and 23. Northern Tamil Nadu may also experience morning fog reducing visibility. Chennai will remain partly cloudy. IMD warns of strong winds in the southwest Bay of Bengal and equatorial Indian Ocean, urging caution at sea.
