Experiencing the music of a great artist is a journey that touches the soul. Kokila Kundu (Datta) embodies this journey — her music is not merely a profession, but a spiritual odyssey. From the depth of Indian classical music to the glitz of Bollywood, Kokila’s melodious voice has resonated not only across India but also around the globe. She is not just a singer but a dedicated mentor, shaping the next generation of musicians.
Early Beginnings: A Childhood Steeped in Music
Kokila’s musical journey began at the tender age of five. She learned Hindustani classical music under the guidance of Pandit Amiyo Ranjan Bandopadhyay, mastered Nazrul Geeti with Sukumar Mitra, and absorbed the nuances of Bengali modern songs under Jatileshwar Mukherjee. Spiritual music was nurtured under Bechu Mukherjee, and film songs were honed with guidance from Mrinal Banerjee. Additionally, she trained in Western classical piano with the renowned V. Balsara.
Her playback singing career began in 1998 with the film Sagar, marking the debut of acclaimed actress Indrani Halder.
Kolkata to Mumbai: Carving a Multifaceted Identity
Upon moving to Mumbai, Kokila quickly established her unique presence. Her iconic jingles, such as “Vico Turmeric, not cosmetic”, were recorded in 14 languages, bringing her nationwide recognition.
She also performed on stage with renowned music director Kuldeep Singh under the banner of IPTA (Indian People’s Theatre Association). In the 1990s, her inclination toward devotional music deepened under Padma Shri Anup Jalota, culminating in the 2001 album Bhajan Triveni.
Expanding Knowledge Globally
Kokila’s dedication extended beyond performance. In 2002, she began teaching music at a prestigious Mumbai school and later led the Indian Music Department at Dhirubhai Ambani International School, an initiative spearheaded by Mrs. Nita Ambani.
In 2005, she taught international students in Singapore and later returned to Mumbai to continue her teaching at Maneckji Cooper School.
Recognition on the World Stage
Her 2006 album Anokhe Remix, released in Mumbai by Anup Jalota and in Singapore by Shriram (Alaym Films), achieved international popularity, remaining in the Top 10 charts for 16 weeks.
In 2017, Kokila moved to Canada and became a Student Advisor at LaSalle College, Montreal. Since 2020, she has been running the Sunray Music Academy in Toronto, connecting young students with the richness of Indian music.
A Source of Inspiration
Recently, she was honored with the Award of Excellence for her global contribution to Indian music. Kokila has trained not only ordinary students but also the children of Bollywood stars — including the daughters of Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Sachin Tendulkar — mentoring the likes of Sara Ali Khan and Ananya Panday in their early musical journeys.
