India’s hatchback segment witnessed a fierce internal battle in December 2025, with three models from the same manufacturer competing for the top position. In the end, it was Maruti Suzuki Baleno that surged ahead, emerging as the best-selling hatchback in the country, outperforming not only its in-house rivals but also competitors from Tata Motors, Hyundai, and Toyota.
Despite significant volatility in overall passenger vehicle sales during the final month of 2025, the hatchback segment delivered strong numbers. Maruti Suzuki dominated the charts, with Baleno, Swift, and WagonR locking horns for leadership, before Baleno decisively claimed the crown.
Baleno Leads the Segment with Record Growth
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno topped the December 2025 sales chart with 22,108 units sold, registering a massive 142% year-on-year growth. In December 2024, the premium hatchback had recorded sales of just 9,112 units. With a 22% market share in the hatchback segment, Baleno’s dominance was unmatched.
Priced between ₹5.99 lakh and ₹9.10 lakh (ex-showroom), Baleno’s blend of premium features, fuel efficiency, and aggressive pricing has made it a clear favorite among buyers.
Swift and WagonR Follow Closely
Taking the second position, Maruti Suzuki Swift sold 18,767 units, reflecting an impressive 80% annual growth, up from 10,421 units in December 2024.
The WagonR, another long-time bestseller, secured the third spot with 14,575 units sold. However, unlike its siblings, WagonR saw a 16% year-on-year decline, down from 17,303 units last December.
Budget Hatchbacks Continue to Perform
At fourth place, Maruti Alto K10 recorded 10,829 units, posting a strong 46% growth over its December 2024 tally of 7,410 units, highlighting continued demand for entry-level cars.
Toyota and Tata Make Their Presence Felt
The Toyota Glanza finished fifth, with 6,451 units sold, marking an 85% year-on-year increase. Its performance underlines Toyota’s growing footprint in the premium hatchback space.
At sixth position, Tata Tiago sold 5,826 units, registering a 16% annual growth compared to 5,006 units a year ago.
Hyundai Slips, But Stays in the Top 10
The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios ranked seventh, with 4,010 units sold, though it experienced a 10% decline from December 2024.
Maruti Suzuki S-Presso stood eighth with 3,396 units, while Hyundai i20 claimed the ninth position at 3,339 units.
Altroz Closes the List with Strong Growth
Rounding off the Top 10 Best-Selling Hatchbacks, Tata Altroz recorded 2,871 units, a notable 54% year-on-year growth compared to 1,866 units in December 2024.
Market Insight
December 2025 clearly demonstrated Maruti Suzuki’s overwhelming dominance in the hatchback segment, with five of its models featuring in the Top 10 list. While SUVs continue to gain popularity, the performance of Baleno proves that well-priced hatchbacks still command strong demand in the Indian market.
As 2026 begins, industry watchers will be closely tracking whether Baleno can sustain this momentum—or if its own siblings will challenge its reign once again.
