Renault Duster Makes a Comeback in India, But Faces Strong Competition

India: Renault India has officially launched the all-new Renault Duster, aiming to shake up the compact and mid-size SUV segment with bold looks, modern features, advanced technology, and a strong hybrid engine option. However, despite its promising upgrades, the new Duster faces stiff competition from established rivals in the market.

Duster’s Legacy and Evolution
When Renault first introduced the Duster in India in 2012, it was a breath of fresh air. Amid a market dominated by sedans and hatchbacks, the Duster introduced the “urban SUV” concept, creating a new segment for Indian buyers. Over the years, however, the Duster failed to consistently update itself, allowing competitors like Hyundai Creta to capture significant market share.

Now, with the launch of the new-generation Duster, Renault aims to reclaim its spot. Its self-charging hybrid system emerges as the SUV’s strongest selling point, targeting buyers who seek a blend of performance, efficiency, and modern technology.

Features and Engine Options
The new Duster retains its signature rugged and tough look, but now it appears more modern and muscular. Buyers can choose from three petrol engine options:

  • Entry-level turbo engine for budget-conscious buyers
  • 163 PS petrol engine for power enthusiasts
  • Strong hybrid engine for those focused on fuel efficiency

Premium Features for Modern Buyers
The new Duster comes loaded with a long list of features, including:

  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Electric tailgate and parking brake
  • Ventilated front electric seats
  • Level 2 ADAS
  • 10-inch touchscreen infotainment with in-built Google Maps
  • 10-inch digital instrument cluster
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Auto-dimming IRVM

Additionally, Renault offers an optional 7-year warranty, adding to the SUV’s value proposition. Bookings for the Duster have already begun, with prices expected to be revealed in March. Turbo petrol variants may start deliveries in April, while the hybrid models are likely to reach customers by Diwali 2026.

The Challenge Ahead
Despite its impressive features and hybrid technology, the biggest challenge for the new Duster will be re-establishing its market position. The compact SUV segment is now highly competitive:

  • Hyundai Creta dominates the market
  • Tata Sierra received over 70,000 bookings within days of launch
  • Other strong rivals include Kia Seltos, Toyota HyRider, Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Grand Vitara, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, MG Aster, and Citroën C3 Aircross

The upcoming sales figures will ultimately determine how successful the new-generation Duster is in winning back buyers and overcoming market challenges.
