Mercedes Unveils Hydrogen-Powered NextGenH2 Truck, Capable of 1,000 KM Non-Stop

India: Mercedes-Benz has introduced its NextGenH2 hydrogen-powered truck, a revolutionary step toward zero-emission heavy transport. Unlike traditional diesel trucks, the NextGenH2 runs entirely on hydrogen, producing no pollution, and is designed for long-haul routes where electric trucks often fall short. Daimler Truck has confirmed the launch, and production of the first 100 units will begin at Mercedes’ Wörth plant in Germany by the end of 2026.

1,000 KM Non-Stop Range and Rapid Refueling
The standout feature of the NextGenH2 is its impressive range. On a full hydrogen refill, the truck can cover approximately 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) without stopping—on par with diesel trucks. This makes it ideal for long-distance freight where frequent recharging of electric trucks is a limitation.

Hydrogen refueling is fast and convenient, taking just 10 to 15 minutes, similar to filling up a conventional fuel tank.

Powerful Engine Performance
The truck is equipped with two fuel cell units that generate between 402 and 496 horsepower, enabling it to haul heavy loads even on steep inclines with ease.

How the Technology Works

  • Liquid Hydrogen Storage: Hydrogen is stored as a liquid at extremely low temperatures (-423°F), allowing more fuel to fit in a compact space.
  • Fuel Cell System: Hydrogen combines with oxygen in the fuel cell to produce electricity that powers the motors.
  • Battery Backup: A 101 kWh battery captures energy from regenerative braking and provides additional power on inclines, enhancing overall efficiency.

Advanced Features and Safety

  • Design: The NextGenH2 shares its aerodynamic design with the electric eActros 600, reducing drag and increasing fuel efficiency. The cabin includes high-tech screens and comfortable living space for drivers.
  • Safety Systems: Features such as Active Brake Assist 6 and Active Sideguard Assist 2 help prevent accidents. Special sensors also detect hydrogen leaks to ensure safety.

Tested in Extreme Conditions
Mercedes tested the NextGenH2 prototypes in the Swiss Alps, under extreme cold and heat, to ensure reliability and safety. In one test, the truck carried 20,000 kg (44,000 lbs) of cargo and traveled over 1,000 km, demonstrating its capability for heavy-duty, long-distance transport.

The NextGenH2 represents a major leap in sustainable trucking, combining long-range capability, rapid refueling, and zero emissions—offering a viable alternative to diesel for the logistics industry of the future.
