The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a significant change in FASTag issuance rules for private vehicles. Effective February 1, 2026, owners of cars, jeeps, and vans will no longer need to undergo KYV (Know Your Vehicle) verification when obtaining a new FASTag. This move aims to make toll plaza travel smoother and faster for private vehicle owners.
No More Delays
Earlier, even after activating a FASTag, vehicle owners often faced repeated requests for document submission or verification calls from banks, causing delays in tag activation. With the new rules, the FASTag will be ready for immediate use once issued by the bank.
Banks Take Full Responsibility
Banks will now verify vehicle information directly from the government’s VAHAN database. All necessary documents will be checked at the time of issuing the tag, eliminating the need for repeated verifications by customers.
Relief for Existing Users
Existing FASTag holders are also covered. Verification will only be required in cases of incorrect vehicle tagging, complaints, or misuse of the FASTag.
Reason Behind the Move
NHAI received feedback that many vehicle owners faced procedural hurdles despite having valid documents, with payments sometimes getting stuck in the system. The new rules will speed up toll plaza travel and reduce inconvenience for private vehicle users. This exemption applies only to private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans; commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks will still follow the existing KYV process.
