Chinese Automaker Launches World’s First AI-Based Car Platform: GWM One

Beijing: The automobile industry is rapidly evolving with advanced technologies, and China’s Great Wall Motors (GWM) has taken a major leap by unveiling its AI-powered GWM One platform. This revolutionary platform will allow the production of petrol, diesel, electric (BEV), hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and even hydrogen-powered vehicles on a single structure, making it the first of its kind globally.

No Range-Extender Engines:
At the launch event, GWM President Mu Feng announced that the company will never use range-extender systems, where a small petrol engine generates electricity solely to charge the battery. He explained that such systems are inefficient, as power is lost while traveling through multiple components before reaching the wheels. In tests, range-extender technology was found to be up to 13% less effective than direct-drive systems, consuming more fuel and electricity at high speeds.

About the GWM One Platform:
The AI-based GWM One platform is highly flexible and can underpin a wide variety of vehicles, including:

  • Petrol and diesel cars
  • Fully electric vehicles (BEVs)
  • Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs)
  • Hydrogen-powered cars

Advanced Features for Electric Vehicles:
The platform integrates a 900-volt high-voltage system, supporting ultra-fast charging at speeds above 600 kW.

Enhanced Hybrid Technology:
For hybrid vehicles, GWM has updated its Hi4 hybrid system with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and a 4-speed gearbox. The system allows motors on both front and rear axles, offering better control and power delivery. The company also plans to introduce diesel hybrid engines on this same platform.

Conclusion:
The GWM One platform represents a major technological milestone, offering unprecedented flexibility, efficiency, and performance. By using AI at its core, it promises to streamline vehicle production, reduce energy waste, and pave the way for next-generation multi-powertrain vehicles.
