Beijing: In a major move to prioritize passenger safety, China has announced a ban on hidden or flush car door handles. The new regulation will come into effect on January 1, 2027, meaning Chinese car buyers will no longer see retractable door handles on vehicles.
The decision comes after a tragic incident involving a Xiaomi electric car in one of China’s provinces, where a passenger lost their life because they could not open the door during a fire. Investigations revealed that the hidden handle design prevented the person from escaping the vehicle in time, highlighting a serious safety concern.
Major Design Overhaul Ahead for Cars in China
Following the incident, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued new guidelines mandating that, except for the trunk, all car doors must feature outward-opening mechanical handles. Specific size standards have also been introduced for the handles, ensuring they are functional and easily accessible in emergencies.
This regulation is expected to force Chinese automakers to redesign their vehicles, especially models that had adopted sleek, flush door handles for aesthetics rather than practicality.
From Tesla to Tata: The Global Trend
Flush or retractable door handles gained popularity after being introduced by Tesla, and the trend quickly spread to markets like China and India. In India, automakers such as Tata and Mahindra have begun incorporating flush door handles in new models. While visually appealing, these designs have sparked debates about practicality and safety — a concern now formally addressed by Chinese authorities.
The ban marks a significant shift in automotive safety standards and may influence global design trends, emphasizing functionality over futuristic styling in passenger vehicles.
