As we reflect on the year 2025, we realize that every event—whether perceived as good or bad—shapes our life in ways that only time can reveal. What may seem like immediate happiness or sorrow often transforms in the course of time, acquiring a new meaning altogether.
The future alone determines which events will bring joy and which will bring pain. Sometimes, events that appear unfavorable in the present may ultimately lead to positive outcomes.
Consider the story of a wealthy farmer: one day, his horse broke through the stable wall and ran away. Villagers came to console him, saying, “What a misfortune that your horse ran away.” The farmer replied calmly, “Perhaps it is.”
A few days later, the horse returned, bringing five strong wild horses with it. The villagers exclaimed, “Wow! This is wonderful news!” The farmer simply said, “Perhaps it is.”
Shortly afterward, while attempting to tame one of the wild horses, the farmer’s young son suffered severe injuries, breaking his arms and legs. The villagers mourned, “What a tragedy that your only son is hurt.” Once again, the farmer said, “Perhaps it is.”
The very next day, soldiers arrived in the village. A neighboring kingdom had waged a fierce war, and all able-bodied young men were being conscripted into the army. Because the farmer’s son was injured, the soldiers left him behind. Villagers remarked, “All other boys were taken. Your son survived—what good fortune!” The farmer calmly replied, “Perhaps it is.”
When asked why he always said “perhaps,” the farmer explained, “No one knows what the future holds. Everything depends on time. Time is the supreme force. It has the power to transform fortune into misfortune, and misfortune into fortune.”
This story reminds us that patience and perspective are key. Time, indeed, is the ultimate authority, capable of altering the course of life in ways we may not immediately understand.
