Paush Purnima 2026, falling on January 3, 2026, marks the beginning of the sacred Magh Bath and Kalpavas at the holy city of Prayagraj, considered highly auspicious. Rituals such as bathing, charity, fasting, and worship during this period are believed to grant spiritual progress, mental peace, and ultimately, salvation. Performing special rites and charity on Paush Purnima is also said to strengthen the influence of the Moon (Chandra Bal).
Significance of Paush Purnima and Magh Bath
Paush Purnima marks the start of the holy Magh month bathing rituals. Devotees perform Kalpavas, a month-long stay at the sacred confluence of rivers (Sangam) with daily rituals, considered equivalent in merit to donating hundreds of thousands of cows.
On Paush Purnima, it is recommended to bathe before sunrise, worship Lord Madhusudan, feed Brahmins, and perform charity according to one’s means. In the evening, devotees can attend the Satyavrat Katha of Lord Satyanarayan. According to scriptures, those who observe these rituals are believed to ascend to divine realms, enjoying celestial bliss. The sacred waters of the Sangam are considered imbued with life-giving energy.
Rituals to Perform
- Early morning ritual bath in rivers or other sacred waters.
- Worship of deities and ancestors (Pitru Tarpan).
- Offering white sandalwood, rice, white flowers, incense, lamps, and white garments to strengthen lunar energy.
The Power of Charity
Charity holds special significance from Paush Purnima through the Magh month. Those seeking specific desires should donate according to their capacity. In winter, woolen clothes, blankets, and warm garments are considered especially auspicious donations. Devotees who cannot donate throughout the month are advised to at least perform charity on Purnima and Amavasya to ensure spiritual benefits. Observing the Magh month with bathing, fasting, charity, and worship of Lord Madhav is said to yield immense spiritual merit, as mentioned in the Mahabharata, Anushasan Parva:
“Dasthirthasahastrani tistrah kotyastatha paraah. Samagacchanti Maghyaam tu Prayage Bharatarsabhah.”
Magnitude of the Festival
During the Magh month, around 3.1 million pilgrims from various holy sites converge at Prayagraj. Devotees who strictly follow the prescribed rituals during this period are believed to be liberated from sins and ascend to heavenly realms.
Strengthening Lunar Influence (Chandra Bal)
Those undergoing the Moon Mahadasha or experiencing mental stress are advised to wear a 9-ratti pearl in a silver ring on the smallest finger of the right hand after proper consecration. For additional benefits, the pearl can also be worn in a crescent-shaped pendant around the neck.
Paush Purnima 2026 offers devotees a rare spiritual opportunity to enhance their mental peace, lunar energy, and overall spiritual growth through sacred baths, charity, fasting, and rituals.
