The admission process for Nursery, KG, and Class 1 has already begun in Delhi’s private and government schools. Online applications have been open on the Delhi Education Directorate website since 4 December 2025. However, this year, parents must pay special attention to the age criteria, as new rules will be applicable for the 2026-27 session.
What Is the Age Limit for School Admission in Delhi?
According to a circular released by the Delhi Education Directorate on 24 October 2025, the minimum and maximum age limits for admissions, as per the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), are as follows:
| Class | Age Limit |
|---|---|
| Nursery (Balvatika 1 / Pre-School 1) | Minimum 3 years, Maximum 4 years |
| LKG (Balvatika 2 / Pre-School 2) | Minimum 4 years, Maximum 5 years |
| UKG (Balvatika 3 / Pre-School 3) | Minimum 5 years, Maximum 6 years |
| Class 1 | Minimum 6 years, Maximum 7 years |
Note: The age is calculated as of 31 March of the admission year. For example, for the 2026-27 session, the child’s age will be considered as of 31 March 2026.
Is There Any Relaxation in Age Criteria?
The Directorate has allowed a relaxation of up to 1 month on both the minimum and maximum age for Nursery to Class 1 admissions. The decision regarding this concession will rest with the school principal.
Important Update:
For the first time, these new age rules will apply for the 2026-27 session. Earlier, the admission process for the 2025-26 session followed the previous age criteria.
Parents are advised to carefully check their child’s eligibility before applying to ensure compliance with the updated age guidelines.
