Char Dham Yatra to Begin 11 Days Earlier This Year; Government and Administration Gear Up

Preparations have begun at the government and administrative level for the renowned Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand, which is set to start 11 days earlier this year. The extended schedule is expected to accommodate a larger number of pilgrims.

Last year, the Char Dham Yatra commenced on April 30, 2025. However, this year the pilgrimage will begin on April 19, 2026. The Uttarakhand government and tourism department have already initiated preparations, with Tourism Secretary Dheeraj Singh Garvyal stating that all arrangements are being expedited to ensure pilgrims’ convenience. He emphasized that systems for registration and darshan will be fully updated and streamlined.

Benefits for Pilgrims
Traditionally, the Char Dham Yatra begins on Akshaya Tritiya. This year, Akshaya Tritiya falls on April 19, which coincides with the official commencement of the pilgrimage. Announcements regarding the opening of the temple gates, along with related customs and schedules, will be made around Basant Panchami.

Starting the Yatra earlier will allow pilgrims more time for darshan, and the influx of devotees is expected to boost local business. Historically, the gates of Gangotri and Yamunotri are opened first on Akshaya Tritiya.

Previous Disruptions
In 2025, the Char Dham Yatra was disrupted due to multiple factors. Initially, tensions between India and Pakistan affected travel. Later, natural disasters, including the Dharali and Tharali incidents and heavy rainfall, further hampered pilgrims from reaching the shrines. With an earlier start this year, authorities hope that these disruptions will be minimized, and local commerce will see a positive impact.

Administrative preparations have already begun, with Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey reviewing the arrangements in Rishikesh. A review at the Chief Secretary level is also planned shortly, where key decisions on finalizing preparations will be made.
