Star Indian middle-order batsman Tilak Varma will miss the opening matches of India’s T20I series against New Zealand following a medical setback.
Out for Three Matches
Varma suffered from testicular torsion during a recent match against Bengal, forcing him to undergo surgery in Rajkot. According to the BCCI, he will be unavailable for the first three T20Is against New Zealand. His availability for the remaining two matches will be assessed based on his recovery and training progress. Varma was discharged from the hospital on Thursday morning and is expected to return to Hyderabad on Friday. Officials confirmed that his condition is stable and showing improvement.
Recovery Timeline
The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) has stated that full recovery may take three to four weeks, making it unlikely that he will play in all five matches of the series. The team selectors have yet to announce a replacement for him.
Optimistic Outlook
However, close sources to Varma are optimistic about a quicker return. Speaking to Cricbuzz, a source revealed, “This was a minor surgery and not related to any bone injury. Tilak will be fit within a week. He will likely play in at least some of the T20Is against New Zealand.”
India’s first match of the World Cup is scheduled for 7 February in Mumbai against the USA, and Varma is expected to be available well before the tournament begins.
