New Delhi, January 7, 2026: Tensions escalated in Old Delhi last night during a demolition drive when protesters allegedly resorted to stone-pelting at police personnel, prompting swift action from authorities. An FIR has been registered and five people have been arrested, with a Samajwadi Party MP’s name reportedly surfacing in the case.
The incident occurred near the Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque, adjacent to a graveyard, as the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) team carried out a court-mandated campaign to remove encroachments. During the operation, some individuals reportedly attacked police officers by throwing glass bottles, injuring at least five personnel.
Senior police officials said investigations are ongoing to determine whether the violence erupted spontaneously or was a premeditated attempt to obstruct the demolition drive. CCTV footage and videos circulated on social media are being analyzed, and statements of witnesses and those in custody are being recorded to identify the perpetrators.
The FIR has been filed under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 221 (obstructing a public servant), 132 (use of criminal force to deter a public servant), 121 (voluntarily causing hurt to prevent duty), 191 (rioting), 223(a) (disobedience to lawful orders of a public servant), along with provisions of the Public Property (Prevention of Damage) Act, 1984.
DMC officials clarified that the Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque was not damaged during the operation. Around 30 bulldozers and 50 dumpers were deployed, and over 300 DMC personnel were involved to clear structures declared illegal by the Delhi High Court.
A senior officer confirmed that law and order has been restored in the area, and strict legal action will be taken against those involved in the violence. The involvement of Samajwadi Party MP Mohibullah Nadvi is currently under police investigation.
